It’s satisfying to feel that you’ve got your money’s worth out of a beauty product. When making beauty stretch, here are a few simple ways you can make your cosmetics, fragrances and skincare products last longer, without going to too much effort.
MAKING BEAUTY STRETCH
FIX THOSE EYESHADOWS
Your eyeshadow palette is likely to be one of the most important items in your cosmetics collection. Yet when they break during travel (or through impact), people often throw them away. Here’s a happy fact – it’s really easy to fix them again. Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol (or argan oil), then press the eyeshadow with the back of a spoon. This should make it look good as new again.
REVIVE GUNKY NAIL POLISHES
If your nail polish has hardened or gone ‘gloopy’, add a few drops of nail polish remover. This thins the product out, making it easier to apply. Be careful not to go overboard though, as this makes the polish form a rather strange consistency!
USE A SPONGE
Want to know why you’re getting through swathes of foundation and concealer? It might be to do with how you’re applying it. Swap your fingers for a cosmetic sponge. This means you’ll use less of the product, and lengthen its lifespan.
MIX BRONZER WITH MOISTURISER
Those last few dregs of bronzer can be difficult to get out of the pot (not to mention apply with a brush). Instead of throwing them away, add some moisturiser to create a shimmery cream that can be applied to the cheekbones.
KEEP YOUR LIPSTICKS COOL
Lipsticks tend to suffer in warmer months. They also don’t cope well with humidity. In the summer, move your lipsticks to a cooler, dryer area of the house, or even in the fridge, during a heat-wave.
WASH YOUR MAKE-UP BRUSHES
Cosmetics brushes, if left unwashed for a long time, can be a magnet for bacteria. This is then transferred to all your make-up items, which reduces their lifespan (and can lead to unpleasant pimple break-outs when applied to your skin). Simply wash the brushes with warm water and soap, at least every week or so.
MAKE YOUR PERFUME LAST LONGER
If you’ve invested in an expensive perfume like Coco Chanel Mademoiselle, you’re going to want to get the most from it. Before applying it on the skin, dab on a bit of Vaseline. This helps to lock in the scent for much longer.
MIX FOUNDATION WITH LOTION
Chances are that your skin doesn’t need a heavy foundation anyway – in which case, mixing your foundation with moisturiser is a great option. It not only extends the life of your trusty make-up base; it also hydrates your skin at the same time.
ADD WATER TO SHAMPOO
This hack is great for extending the life of your shampoo. When you’ve used about half of the bottle, fill it up with water and mix together. It doesn’t dilute the shampoo as much as you might think, and makes the bottle last so much longer.
