Although it is nice to have a clean and orderly house all year round, there is something especially satisfying about making sure everything is in tip-top condition just before the spring kicks in. The sun comes out, highlighting every smudge on the windows, every grubby fingerprint on the mirrors, and every speck of dust on the furniture. Combined with the extra energy and motivation that the sunlight gives us, Spring is the perfect opportunity to get your house in order. Here, we look at some top tips to help you make your home spring ready.
DO AN AUDIT OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED
How many times have you noticed something is coming loose, has a part missing, or has stopped working, and you put it aside to fix at ‘some point’? Well, now is that ‘some point’. Go through your home and anything that needs repairing or replacing, do it. If the items are under warranty, you may be able to get them repaired or replaced for free, otherwise, you can find online appliance spare parts to repair them and get them back into a good working condition.
DECLUTTER + REMOVE
This is the time to get your Marie Kondo on and have a big decluttering session. The more stuff that you can get rid of, the less stuff you have to clean and tidy away. If something is not longer needed, used or bring any joy to your life at all, it is time to say goodbye to it. Make sure that you dispose of it responsibly – if it is in good working condition still, try selling it or passing it on to someone who will get use or joy out of it. Places like Craigslist, Facebook Markeplace and eBay are great places to sell your unwanted items and potentially make some money back on them!
WASH THE WINDOWS
The sun streaming in highlights all the grime that has collected over the winter months, so it is time to grab the hot soapy water and a cloth and get cleaning. Many people also swear by the use of white vinegar and newspaper to get rid of the smears and fingerprints. Do both inside and outside – hire a professional window cleaner to do the upstairs windows if necessary.
SWEEP CLEAN THE GARDEN
Now is the time to grab your broom and give your garden or yard a good sweep to get rid of the dead leaves and twigs that have no doubt collected up over the winter.
WASH + ROTATE YOUR BEDDING
Spring is the ideal time to wash your pillows and duvets and swap your heavy duvets for your more lightweight ones. Pack the heavy ones away carefully – vacuum seal bags are a great space-saving way of doing this. Do not forget to freshen up your mattress and flip it over. Our top tip is to sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda over the surface of your mattress, leave it a few hours and then vacuum it up to leave it fresh.
These tips will get your home ready for the warmer spring months that are hopefully not that far away now.
