It can be so exciting moving into a new home, and you probably won’t have to think about too much other than getting all your personal belongings in the right place and settling in to enjoy your home. However, the truth is that there are some other important considerations to think of. And the sooner you get them done and checked off your to-do list, the more comfortable you’ll be in your new property.

Read on to find out things to do after moving into a new home.

When you move into a new house, the most important things to do after moving into a new home is you’ll immediately want to change the locks. If you’re renting, this is not something you should do without permission (and you may not receive it, depending on your landlord), but if you own the property, then it’s definitely a priority. You simply don’t know how many people have keys to your new place, and the safest option is to call in a locksmith to replace all the locks not just on your front door, but all the other doors too. While you’re changing locks, you can also ensure that the ones installed on your windows work properly and that you have the keys for them.

Before you moved in, any repairs should have been carried out by the landlord or previous owner, but sometimes they can be missed either through forgetfulness, the fact that they weren’t picked up on during a survey, or because the previous occupiers assumed that you would make the repairs yourself.

Because you can’t be sure that all is well with the plumbing in the property, especially if it is an older property, you should check it all to be safe. Most of the time, there will be no issues, but if you do find something amiss, you can get it dealt with sooner rather than later. If it was something that was meant to be done before you moved in, you might even be able to get compensation from the previous owner to pay for the work. If you leave it too long, this won’t be possible as there’ll be no proof of when the problem first manifested.

Of course, you’ll clean your new home when you move in; this is something that most people will do as a matter of course. However, if you are able to and there is time between the day you purchase the property and the day you move in – when the house is empty – it’s a good idea to hire a professional cleaner to make sure the house is completely spotless. The cleaner can clean the oven, steam the carpets, wipe down your kitchen cabinets (inside and out), and make sure that every nook and cranny in the property is cleaned too. Once the furniture is in place, this is not going to be possible, and it’s great to make a new start in your new house with everything feeling and smelling fresh. Sometimes only a professional standard clean will do.
