Are you all set for your next travel adventure? Passport, check. Sunglasses, check. Unwarranted confidence that you’ve thought of everything? Double-check. But wait! Before you head off on the next big adventure, let’s talk about some all-too-common travel blunders and travel mistakes to avoid that could turn your dream trip into a bit of a nightmare.

OVERPACKING

Let’s start with the mother of all mistakes and travel mistakes to avoid—packing like you’re fleeing the country permanently. If your luggage looks like it’s ready to burst at the seams, you’ve probably overdone it. Remember, every extra pair of shoes is a burden you’ll carry across cobblestone streets and up narrow hotel staircases. Be ruthless with your packing; your back will thank you.

IGNORING LOCAL CUSTOMS + ETTIQUETTE

Nothing screams ‘tourist’ more than a traveller who sticks out like a sore thumb, blissfully unaware of local customs. Do a bit of research. For instance, don’t be that person who claps wildly at the end of a performance in Japan—it’s just not done. Understanding local etiquette is not just polite, it’s crucial.

SKIMPING ON TRAVEL INSURANCE

“Oh, it’ll never happen to me!” said every traveller right before their luggage was lost, or they chipped a tooth on an Italian olive pit. Travel insurance is that parachute you hope you never need to pull. Don’t skimp on it. Just like sunscreen, it’s protection against potential burns.

NOT DOUBLE CHECKING TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Expired passport? Visa issues? Welcome to the land of missed flights and border control dramas. Always double-check your documents well in advance. There’s nothing like the cold sweat of realization that your passport is expired as you pack your toothbrush the night before your flight.

FORGETTING TO NOTIFY YOUR BANK

Unless you fancy a frantic call home from a blocked card at a foreign ATM, let your bank know you’ll be gallivanting across the globe. Banks have a hair-trigger reaction to foreign transactions unless they expect them.

TRAVELLING WITH MEDICAL CANNABIS

Here’s a hot tip if you’re travelling with medical cannabis trying to fly with your medical cannabis without a card, or the relevant paperwork, or to a destination where it’s illegal even with the right documentation, for example, is an express ticket to a world of trouble. Countries vary wildly in their drug laws, and some places are super strict. Always check the legality of carrying and using your medical cannabis wherever you are heading. The last thing you want is a holiday extended by a court order.

FALLING FOR TOURIST TRAPS

That restaurant right next to the Colosseum might as well have “tourist trap” flashing in neon lights. Avoid places where menus are in 12 different languages, and prices are triple what the locals pay. Wander off the beaten path to where the locals eat and play. Your wallet and your stomach will thank you.

NEGLECTING YOUR PHONES DATA SETTINGS

Unless you want your phone bill to look like a telephone number, tweak your data settings or get a local SIM card. Roaming charges can be horrifyingly high. Don’t let Instagram cost you the same as a small car.

Travel is about the thrill of the new, the excitement of discovery. But a little bit of planning and common sense goes a long way in avoiding these classic travel troubles, so you can really kick back, relax and enjoy your trip.
